The reality as we get older, the elasticity in our skin decreases and unfortunately, wrinkles and fine lines are on the up! We’ve brought together some tips for you to keep your skin looking healthy and where possible minimise wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes. Prevention is always better than cure, so please share this post with some ‘young uns’ – they’ll thank you for it!
1.Stop using wipes – keep them for babies bottoms only – The piece of advice we give to nearly every new client at the clinic. Why? In a nutshell, these wipes are no good for your skin. Especially around the eye area as you will find that you need to excessively rub your eyes to remove eye shadow and mascara (especially as it’s waterproof). You need to allow your eye make up remover up to dissolve the make-up gently as rubbing will cause the collagen to breakdown around the eye
2. Stop rubbing your eye cream in – it’s not a magic eraser – Over the years, we’ve all applied some sort of eye cream around our eyes and it’s likely it was done by rubbing it. Unfortunately, rubbing our wrinkles isn’t going to make them disappear like some sort of eraser!! You need to be gentle… our advice is to use your ring finger, and gently dab a good (recommended) eye cream around the delicate eye area. And don’t forget to let it settle in before applying your makeup too!
3. Keep hydrated – We all know that we should be drinking more water, around 8 glasses per day and there are lots of health benefits to keeping yourself hydrated, including the wrinkles and fine lines. As we get older our body loses the ability to retain moisture so it’s important to keep your skin hydrated both from the inside and out. Dry skin can look unhealthy and saps your cells of moisture, making your wrinkles more prominent. Water can help maintain the health and function of your body and skin, and an adequate daily intake will keep your cells working properly, as well as help your skin look smoother and suppler, including your eyes. And of course, don’t forget a good quality eye cream that will provide hydration around the delicate eye area from the outside too.
4. Change your pillow cases – The way you sleep can have an impact on the fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes due to the pressure when sleeping on one side. You can try sleeping on your back, but many of us will not be able to control how we sleep at night so having satin or silk pillows can be softer on the skin. Cotton can tug on the skin, which causes wrinkles but satin and silk are more fluid, and can cause less resistance.
5. Get to the opticians – If you find yourself squinting when reading or just looking at things, then get to the opticians as it’s likely that you need glasses or contacts to stop you from squinting. As the skin loses firmness with age, wrinkles form where it has been squeezed (i.e. squinting)
6. Wear sunglasses, even in the winter – As we’ve pointed out, squinting can worsen wrinkles, so the same goes when you’re out in daylight or perhaps driving the car. The next time you’re in the car, think about how much you squint during the journey. Perhaps keep a pair of sunglasses in the glove compartment and wear them all of the time to stop squinting and minimise those crows feet – even in the winter!
7. Keep out of the sun – We all know that exposing our skin to the sun is not good for us, but as the skin around the eye area is a lot thinner this means ageing is more rapid, breaking down the collagen and elastin which causes wrinkles and fine lines. So when you’re slapping on the spf, make sure you don’t forget the eye area (and wear those sunglasses!)
